EXPERIENCE

Dr Lamphiear is a fellowship-trained breast radiologist with over 15 years of experience in all facets of breast imaging.  Having experienced several different practice environments in her career, she is determined that she can take the best from each practice and combine it with her own unique passion for patient experience, top notch training, state-of-the-art cutting edge technology, and the most up to date evidence-based medicine, to create a truly advantageous experience for her breast imaging patients.

Dr. Lamphiear was raised in small-town Jefferson, Iowa and finished most of her education in Iowa. She met her late North Carolinian husband during her intern year in Hawaii.  Their combined medical and military careers gave them the opportunity to see much of the country with their 4 children.  Many of her early career choices were made in conjunction with her husband's career as a Naval aviator; including transitioning in her 3rd year of residency to the University of Florida where she was gained the contrasting perspectives of training under a purely academic center compared to a private practice affiliated university hospital.  After graduating, she took her first post training position with a teleradiology company, knowing this would be temporary until her husband finished active duty; which piqued her interest in rural healthcare. She then returned for additional subspeciality training, completing her breast imaging fellowship at the Susan G. Komen Breast Center in Peoria, IL. Her first post fellowship position was in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. After her husband suffered his first heart attack at age 35 they made the decision to move to warmer weather and closer to his family in the southeast.  Unfortunately, Warren died of a fatal heart attack in 2019 which eventually led her and her four children back home to central Iowa to be nearer to her family support system; and led her to really reevaluate what was important to her.

In her diverse career experiences, she directly observed obstacles of doing high end breast imaging in rural environments and developed a passion for caring for those patients typically underserved by sub-specialty trained radiologists, for example those living in rural communities, Native American reservations, and veterans. Part of her desire to create GRACE is to be able to design a system that can improve access to quality and affordable breast imaging for underserved populations.  Other passions include increasing patient knowledge of and access to risk stratification to allow the most advantageous individualized screening programs for her patients, finding high risk patients earlier to save lives, and imaging and management of breast symptoms in pregnant and nursing patients. Having experienced healthcare from a physician, patient, and family member's perspective she has high regard for improving the patient experience and believes by utilizing education and focusing on the patient’s environment, healthcare can feel more like self-care.

Andrea's free time is limited as a single mom of 4, but when she finds time away from kids’ sporting or music activities, she enjoys traveling, which she has particularly come to love sharing with her children as they get older. She also enjoys photography and spending time near water any chance she gets. While escaping to the exotic always sounds wonderful, the favorite part of her day is snuggling and reading books at bedtime with her kids.

MY ‘WHY’

I have wanted to be a doctor for as long as I can remember, as interacting with and caring for others has always been something that fills my cup. When my father was diagnosed with lung cancer and subsequently passed away within weeks at age 40, rather than being dissuaded I felt more impassioned about going into medicine to not only to save lives, but to try to make the process more tolerable for patients and their families. I still remember the first time I was in a breast center as a student, and thought to myself, “Wow this is scary! There has to be a better way to do this!” I feel honored and inspired to do just that by opening GRACE. Becoming an entrepreneur also feels full circle, as my late husband who heard daily about my passion for my patients, always encouraged me to open my own practice. After moving home to Iowa and discovering what a need there is for accessible, expert breast care in central Iowa, it truly feels like GRACE is my calling.
